Afghan
Evacuation

This presentation lays out the events & challenges observed by the team that developed HKIA.info, a web-based tool that set out to help people safely get to Hamid Karzai International Airport (HKIA) after the fall of Kabul to the Taliban in August 2021.

HKIA.info was designed, launched and supported by Sean Horgan, Stefan Quartemont, and Katie Tobin on 8/21 & 8/22 and repeatedly extended over the final week of evacuations from HKIA, until it closed on 8/30.

The goal of this presentation is to share our experiences with the hope they inform future efforts to help displaced peoples.

After HKIA closed, I shifted my attention to support ground-based evacuation and advocating for reforms of the refugee system in the United States through organizations like the Refugee Council. Here's a link to their Virtual Advocacy Participant Handbook.
